Position Summary The Multi-layer Insulation (MLI) Engineer will be a thermal engineering assistant supporting the design (patterns), assembly, fabrication, and installation of flight and non-flight Multi-Layer Insulation. The candidate might also support the installation of thermal control hardware such as heaters, thermostats, temperature sensors, etc. Duties & Responsibilities Support the design and fabrication of MLI from engineering patterns or drawings developed under the direction of a lead thermal engineer. Support integration and test operations involving installation of MLI and other thermal hardware. Support thermal testing. Work with engineers to develop Work Orders and other documentation to properly track MLI fabrication and assembly efforts. Develop skills to support spacecraft assembly and handling operations in clean room environments. Perform other duties as required. Qualifications BS degree in engineering from an accredited engineering school. A general understanding of radiative heat transfer and material science. Experience with computer aided design. Demonstrated experience and/or education with managing plans and coordinating logistics. Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills. Requisition Preferences: •A Bachelor's degree in Aerospace, Industrial, Mechanical, Chemical, Engineering or Applied Physics) with a minimum of 5 years of related experience or a master's degree in similar disciplines with a minimum of 2 year of related experience or a PhD in similar disciplines. Mechanical assembly and sewing skills are beneficial. CAD experience is desired. Familiarity with flight thermal balance tests (instrument, spacecraft). Familiarity with thermal environments across the solar system for flight system development. A general comprehension of space thermal architecture, systems, design & hardware. Familiarity with typical instrumentation and ground support equipment used in thermal tests.
